How a Jar Test for fluoride works

Published: · PayPerLiter

A Jar Test is a laboratory method for assessing how water responds to controlled treatment conditions. Waters with the same fluoride concentration can behave differently because of pH, alkalinity, sulphates, phosphates, calcium, organic matter and other constituents.

General stages

  1. Characterise the sample and verify that it is representative.
  2. Define a test matrix suited to the water and the regulatory target.
  3. Assess general mixing and solid-liquid separation conditions.
  4. Measure residual fluoride and relevant quality parameters.
  5. Analyse reproducibility, operational compatibility and economic feasibility.

What it demonstrates and what it does not

A successful test provides evidence of feasibility under the conditions tested. On its own, it neither guarantees continuous-operation performance nor replaces engineering, health-related controls and commissioning checks.

Technical confidentiality

PayPerLiter uses testing to size a project-specific solution. Formulations, dosages, proprietary parameters and detailed validation results are not published: they form part of each project's confidential technical information.
