The regulatory framework for fluoride in drinking water

Published: · PayPerLiter

Fluoride is regulated as a chemical parameter in drinking water. In Spain, Royal Decree 3/2023 sets a parametric value of 1.5 mg/L, aligned with Directive (EU) 2020/2184. WHO uses 1.5 mg/L as its guideline value. Specific requirements outside the EU must be reviewed country by country.

Consequences of exceeding the parametric value

In Spain and the EU, exceeding the parametric value requires application of the framework for health classification, notification, risk assessment and corrective measures established by the regulations and the competent authority. It should not be claimed that every exceedance automatically entails identical restrictions.

Treatment and monitoring

Under this Spain/EU framework, the operator must verify final water quality and ensure that corrective measures do not adversely affect other parameters. Installing a treatment system does not remove self-monitoring and reporting obligations.
